about

Slow Rinse is the new single from Tess McKenna’s forthcoming album, Before You Wandered In, due for release on Styletone Recordings in 2019.

Slow Rinse is all raw gloss and attitude. Overdriven chords, spacy drums and stripped back bass meet up with a chorus of voices that both charm and warn, “Better slow down,”. McKenna’s epic arrangement counters the relaxed ambivalence of stoner-rock with the lo-fi militancy of indie-rock.

At first glance Slow Rinse appears to be a poignant tale about the vagaries of dealing down at the local laundrette in clear view. However, what lies just beneath the surface is a snapshot of someone dealing with more than just drugs and the laundry.

“Slow Rinse started life as a detuned guitar riff and bridge and then I let in some memories and some attitude. It’s ended up about a teenager who’s breaking away from the constraints of a scene rife with sexism and risky behaviour.
It’s about the moment just before I borrowed a bass and an amp and formed a three-piece rock band (The Right Furniture) with some like-minded musicians,” says McKenna.

Go-to collaborators, Ash Davies drums (Ash Davies and Matt Walker), and Karen Rush bass/vocals (Out Of The Compost-NZ), do whatever needs to be done, skilfully and dynamically, to support McKenna’s astonishing display of guitars and vocals.

Recorded and mixed by co-producer, Roger Bergodaz (Lost Ragas), Slow Rinse, despite clocking in at eight plus minutes (8:28), gives the illusion of going by
all too quickly.

SLOW RINSE

Better Slow Down
It’s Soo-ooh. it’s Super Sunday
And everybody’s got their own way
Done washing and cleaning
And drying and dealing

When’s he gonna give ‘em that bag?
He’s got another one down in his pants
Oh Better Slow. Slow Down

It’s Soo-ooh. it’s Super Sunday
But everybody’s got their own day
It might look like it’s a party
But it’s over once you’ve started

When’s he gonna give ‘em that bag?
He’s got another one down in his pants
Oh Better Slow. Slow Down
Better Slow Down

When you fill up with anticipation

Tapping on your phone shifting in your seat
Making an art form out of fare evasion
Jumping over gates running down the street
I feel bad I’ve been holding out on you
It could’ve been me-e-e-e-e.e.e.e

Better Slow Down
It’s Soo-ooh. it’s Super Sunday
And nobody’s working Monday
I look like your side-kick
Wear earphones and lipstick

When’s he gonna give ‘em that bag?
He’s got another one down in his pants
Oh Better Slow. Slow Down
When’s he gonna give ‘em that bag?
When’s he gonna give ‘em that bag?
Better Slow Down
